Better windows.
Windows provide views and let in both natural light and fresh air. But they also allow heat to enter and
leave your home quickly. How your windows are oriented, the size of the windows, and the type of windows
you use can have a major impact on the energy effi ciency and comfort of your home.
Better window design and orientation.
North facing windows
- Your 5 Star house is best positioned so the main living areas face north and benefi t from access to the
light and warmth provided by the winter sun.
- North facing windows may need to be shaded in summer by eaves, verandahs or blinds to
help keep the house cool.
East and west facing windows
- Receive little sun in winter, autumn or spring, but excessive sun in summer.
- Windows should be kept reasonably small to minimise their effect on the overall interior temperature,
and should be shaded in summer.
South facing windows
- Receive little winter sun and only early morning and late afternoon summer sun.
- Windows should also be kept reasonably small.
Roof windows and skylights
- Should be kept as small as possible.
- They should be double-glazed or have a ceiling diffuser fitted.
- Shading should be provided to keep out summer heat and keep in winter warmth.
Better kinds of windows.
Choosing the right type and amount of glazing for your house can signifi cantly improve its energy
efficiency. Winter heat loss can be minimised with high performance window products.
- Select window frames which reduce heat loss. Consider using timber, PVC or aluminium improved or
thermally broken window frames. These can add approximately half a star to your energy rating.
- Consider double-glazing some or all of the windows in your house. Double glazing reduces winter heat
loss and can allow you to use large windows and still achieve a 5 Star rating.
- In houses with large areas of glass, particularly apartments, using energy effi cient glass on the
windows which are exposed to summer sun, can help make your house more comfortable and
reduce air conditioning costs.
